Ocasio-Cortez Calls on Department of Energy to Publicly Restore Study That Strengthens Puerto Rico’s Energy Security

Press Release

Washington, D.C.- Today, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) led a letter urging Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright to reinstate the Department of Energy's (DoE) Puerto Rico 100 (PR100) website.

The website was the primary hub for the DoE's PR100 study, as the Department has invested over two years, and millions of dollars, into PR100 to develop strategies to fulfill its mandated goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050. This goal was established because Puerto Rico's electrical system has historically been documented to have reliability challenges with worsening outage metrics, reaching levels significantly worse than the U.S. average.

"PR100 is part of an important initiative to help transition the archipelago from a grid facing high costs and significant operational difficulties to a more affordable and resilient clean energy system that can deliver energy security to the people of Puerto Rico," the lawmaker wrote."The website was crucial for the study to succeed by providing direct public access to the study, including summaries and raw data. The removal of the website diminishes the study's ability to help guide federal and local efforts to support Puerto Rico's renewable energy goals."

The letter notes that the Department of Energy has also recently canceled billions of dollars in Puerto Rican renewable energy infrastructure project funding and loans, which is impacting planned transition efforts. The removal of the PR100 website complicates the DoE's original mission to ensure America's security and prosperity by addressing energy and environmental challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.

The letter concludes with a request that the website be reinstated no later than February 12, 2026.

In addition to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, the letter was cosigned by Representatives Brendan Boyle (PA-02), André Carson (IN-07), Ed Case (HI-01), Sean Casten (IL-06), Judy Chu (CA-28), Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Valerie Foushee (NC-04), Daniel Goldman (NY-10), Pablo Hernández (D-PR), Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Jared Huffman (CA-02), Ted Lieu (CA-36), Grace Meng (NY-06), Jerrold Nadler (NY-12), Mike Quigley (IL-05), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Mark Takano (CA-39), Ritchie Torres (NY-15), and Nydia Velázquez (NY-07).

The letter is endorsed by El Puente, CAMBIO PR, and Queremos Sol.
