Legacies of military forced labour in Mali: traditional institutions and local development outcomes

Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to understand the long-term developmental legacies of colonial forced labour systems. The preliminary results suggest that historical coerced labour practices have long-lasting effects on local development, especially on education, in a context where formal schooling emerged as a product of colonialism.

This is an part of the Structural Transformation and Economic Growth (STEG) programme.
