DNC Chair Slams Republicans for Voting to Send Health Insurance Premiums Skyrocketing and Shut Down the Government Arrow

Republicans in Congress voted against funding the government and fixing the health care crisis they created by voting against Democrats' budget bill, which would have reversed Trump's $1 trillion cut to Medicaid and permanently expanded the Affordable Care Act insurance premium tax credit set to expire at the end of the year. If this tax credit isn't extended, health care premiums will skyrocket by an average of 75% next year. To add insult to injury, House Republicans are now off on vacation until after the government funding deadline.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

"American families are already struggling to afford the basics under Donald Trump's disastrous economic agenda. Today, Republicans in Congress voted to raise health care premiums and shut down the government, even though working and middle-class families are drowning under the rising cost of rent, child care, and groceries under Trump. It's time Republicans grow a spine and actually stand up for Americans, instead of only looking out for their billionaire donors who couldn't even tell you the cost of a dozen eggs, a monthly electricity bill, or a gallon of gas."

REMINDER: These health care cuts remain deeply, deeply unpopular with the American people:

  • The vast majority - 71% - of Americans oppose cuts to Medicaid.
  • Over half - 55% - of Republicans oppose these cuts.
  • 73% of Independents oppose these cuts.
