Taiwan Caucus Co-Chairs Question Secretary Rubio on One China Policy, Arms Sales to Taiwan

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Wednesday, U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) and Andy Barr (KY-06), co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio about U.S. policy toward Taiwan, including the status of a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, reports that the Administration had paused arms sales following recent discussions with the People's Republic of China, and the Administration's commitment to the longstanding framework that has guided U.S.-Taiwan relations.

"The Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiqués, and the Six Assurances have formed the foundation of U.S.-Taiwan relations for nearly five decades," said Representatives Bera and Barr. "We were encouraged by Secretary Rubio's reaffirmation that the United States continues to adhere to this longstanding framework, including our One China Policy, and that decisions regarding arms sales to Taiwan are not negotiated with or subject to consultation with Beijing."

"At a time when the People's Republic of China continues to increase military pressure on Taiwan, it is critical that the United States continue providing Taiwan with the defensive capabilities necessary to deter aggression and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," continued Representatives Bera and Barr. "As co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, we will continue working with our colleagues in Congress and the Administration to advance the review, approval, and delivery of defensive capabilities to Taiwan consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act."
