By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, eggs have been consumed and enjoyed for centuries in the United States, beginning with the English settlers who introduced domesticated egg-laying hens to Jamestown settlement in the 1600s; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, Virginia chicken egg production totaled more than 733 million eggs which, when packaged, are more than 61 million dozen count containers; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's egg producers care for flocks ranging in size from a few hens to flocks comprised of several thousand birds, with each laying bird producing between 280 to 320 eggs a year; and
WHEREAS, chicken eggs are Virginia's 10th leading agricultural commodity, generating more than $146 million in cash receipts in 2024; and
WHEREAS, a single egg contains only 70 calories, is a great source of protein, and is packed with 13 essential nutrients to include choline, folate, iron, and zinc; and
WHEREAS, the egg is part of a healthy diet, contributing to muscle strength, brain function, eye health, and weight management; and
WHEREAS, eggs are a staple of many American diets as they are a convenient and nutritious food choice for today's busy lifestyle, due to the variety of ways they can be prepared and used in numerous dishes such as quiches, frittatas, and omelets; and
WHEREAS, May is National Egg Month during which we recognize and thank Virginia egg producers for harvesting nutritious eggs that help meet the demand for this delicious product in the Commonwealth; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize May 2026, as VIRGINIA EGG MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
