Convergence Lecture Series Continues with Data Analytics in Sports

The inaugural Convergence lecture series continues with "Get in the Game! Data Analytics Via Sports," a deep dive into the fast-paced world of professional sports, where data and statistics play a key role in developing the strategies that drive teams to success.

Go beyond the scoreboard with Tim Chartier, professor of mathematics and computer science at Davidson College and one of America's leading voices in sports analytics. Chartier has collaborated with several of the country's top professional leagues and mentored dozens of students who built successful careers in the NBA, MLB, NFL, NASCAR and ESPN.

He has won numerous awards for his research, writing and teaching, held leadership positions in national mathematics associations, and received recognition in prominent publications such as Bloomberg and USA Today.

In this presentation, Chartier will show the audience how data and athletics intertwine, allowing analysts to optimize rosters, predict outcomes, and identify paths to victory. The lecture will include real-world examples, guidance for education and careers, and a Q&A session.

The lecture will be held at noon on Saturday, Novermber 22, in the Student Activities Center Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Reserve your seats online.

The Convergence lecture series is presented by by Stony Brook University's Institute for Creative Problem Solving in collaboration with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The series welcomes curious minds of all kinds to explore the wide world of mathematical thinking. Each talk offers a fresh perspective - whether it's diving into real-world applications, unpacking abstract concepts or just having fun with fascinating patterns, puzzles and problems.
