Senator Peters Urges Trump Administration to Oppose Annexation of the West Bank

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) pressed President Trump to oppose the annexation of territory in the West Bank amid the ongoing implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Previously, President Trump had expressed his opposition to annexation, claiming he would "not allow Israel to annex the West Bank." The recent ceasefire agreement omits any mention of the West Bank. In a letter with his Senate colleagues, Peters urged the President to enforce his administration's stated opposition to annexation of the West Bank, particularly while steps to end to the conflict in Gaza are being implemented.

"We write to express support for your comments opposing any efforts by the Government of Israel to annex territory in the West Bank and to urge your Administration to promote steps to preserve the viability of a two-state solution and the success of the Abraham Accords," the senators wrote. "In this moment, it is essential that the United States reject measures that undermine the viability of a negotiated resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

The letter also reiterates the senators' relief at the long-sought release of the Israeli hostages, the continued need to ensure humanitarian aid enters Gaza, the necessity for the remains of all deceased Israeli hostages to be returned to their families, and the importance of securing lasting peace, stability, and security in the region.

Peters released a statement on social media celebrating the return of the remaining hostages held captive by Hamas and expressed his support for a lasting ceasefire. Peters has also called for a robust expansion of efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to innocent civilians Gaza, including food, water, and medical supplies.
