Mayor Danise "DeeDee" Henriquez and the Key West City Commission honored Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week during the November meeting.
The National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week since 2000.
The proclamation is aimed at educating the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless, including the shortage of affordable housing in the City of Key West. Very low-income residents are particularly vulnerable. This effort encourages the community to support homelessness-assistance service providers. It provides community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.
"The Key West City Commission recognizes that hunger and homelessness continue to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in our community," reads the proclamation,
"and the intent of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is consistent with the activities of local hunger and homeless service organizations."
