Fairfield Fire Department leads multi-agency responses to fires along Highway 12 on consecutive days

The Fairfield Fire Department responded to three vegetation fires along Highway 12 on August 30 and August 31. Each incident prompted multiple alarms and required a coordinated regional response.

On Saturday, August 30, dispatchers received the first 9-1-1 call at 1:03 p.m. reporting a vegetation fire south of Highway 12 in the area of Ledgewood Creek. The fire jumped the highway to the north side, ultimately burning approximately five acres. The fire was upgraded to a third alarm before crews stopped its forward progress. Evacuations were conducted along James Street in Fairfield as a precaution. Multiple roads, including Highway 12, were temporarily closed to protect the public and provide a safe working area for first responders. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported by Medic Ambulance to a local medical facility for evaluation.

On Sunday, August 31, dispatchers began receiving multiple 9-1-1 calls starting at 3:38 p.m. reporting a fire in an open field north of Highway 12 and west of Pennsylvania Avenue. The blaze quickly spread through dry fuels, burning approximately 15 acres and prompting a second alarm. Highway 12 and several nearby roadways were closed during the afternoon response. While no structures were lost on either day, Sunday's fire did impact PG&E utility poles in the area. PG&E crews are working overnight to replace the damaged poles.

Later on Sunday, August 31, while Fairfield crews were patrolling the perimeter of Saturday's fire, they reported a third fire burning in a field south of Highway 12, across from the location of Sunday's earlier fire. Fairfield units responded and requested a second alarm due to fast-moving, wind-driven conditions. The fire burned approximately five acres before being contained. A close examination determined the fire originated in the Suisun Fire Protection District's jurisdiction, and command was transferred to Suisun Fire District staff. The fire was a new start and not related to the previous two incidents.

All three incidents involved a multi-agency response. Fire crews from neighboring departments assisted on scene, while additional units provided backfill coverage for Fairfield fire stations. Medic Ambulance provided medical support throughout. The Fairfield Police Department assisted with evacuations and traffic control.

No civilian injuries were reported. All three fires remain under investigation.

The Fairfield Fire Department reminds the community that roadside and field fires remain a significant threat during peak fire season and urges motorists and residents to use caution in high-risk areas.
