National Park Service to Authorize Nearly 80 Miles of Trails for Bicycles at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Date:
February 5, 2026

WHISKEYTOWN, Calif. - Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in northern California will soon be authorized to designate nearly 80 miles of trails for bicycle and e-bike use under a new National Park Service rule that expands responsible recreation access.

This final rule will publish in the Federal Register publish on Monday, February 9th. It will appear in the Federal Register reading room for public inspection today. The effective date of this rule will be March 11th.

While bicycles are already permitted on many existing trails, the rule would clear the way for bicycle use across the full planned trail network once trail improvements, new construction, closures, and reroutes are completed and the trails are formally designated for bicycle use by the park's superintendent.

Online maps will allow visitors to understand where bicycles and e-bikes are allowed, so that they can plan their rides ahead of time. "Whiskeytown is excited to continue modernizing its recreation infrastructure-meeting the needs of today's visitors, strengthening community connections, and providing safe, healthy opportunities for outdoor exercise," said Park Superintendent Josh Hoines. "This action implements a publicly vetted plan that balances recreation, safety, and resource protection."

An environmental review found no significant impact to opening up the added recreational opportunities on these trails. Situated at the junction of the Klamath Mountains and Sacramento Valley, just west of the city of Redding, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a popular spot for water sports, hiking, exploring Gold Rush history, and enjoying diverse scenery.

The rule advances President Donald J. Trump's executive orders to improve access to public lands, reduce unnecessary regulatory barriers and ensure federal lands are managed for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people. It also supports Secretary Doug Burgum's priority to modernize recreation opportunities while maintaining strong stewardship of America's natural resources.
