The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence to discuss AI in the public service

The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI), chaired by Deputy Malcolm Byrne, will discuss the guidelines for the responsible use of AI in the public service and government technology on Tuesday, the 14th of October, at 11.00 am in Committee Room 4.

The Committee will hear from the following Officials:

  • Mr. Barry Lowry, Government Chief Information Officer, Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation
  • Ms. Marianne Cassidy, Assistant Secretary, Public Service Transformation Division, Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation
  • Mr. Patrick Moran, Principal Officer, Public Service Transformation Division, Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation

Speaking before the meeting, the CathaoirleachDeputy Malcolm Byrne said:

" In May 2025 the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation published the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service to empower public servants to use Artificial Intelligence in the delivery of services. While the guidelines are an important step towards innovation in the public sector and improving the public's trust in modern technology, this week the Committee will look to discuss the support for the guidelines in the wider public service and we will discuss examples of public bodies adopting artificial technology in their day-to-day services. We look forward to hearing from the Officials on this issue."

The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence has 14 Members, nine from the Dáiland five from the Seanad.
