Jared Achuff came to Bowie State University with one year of athletic eligibility remaining, but he found opportunities that extended far beyond football. Achuff initially chose Bowie State to continue his football career, but the university's community-centered approach to student-athlete development quickly broadened his experience and shaped his academic and professional path. He is graduating with a Master of Arts in organizational Communications and plans to pursue graduate studies and athlete advocacy.
"It was more like a family community - more intentional with how they care about you. You're not just an athlete. They wanted to see me succeed on and off the field, which my mother and I really appreciated. That's one of the main reasons I chose Bowie State," Achuff said.
During his first year as a graduate student, Achuff played a key role on the football team and earned recognition for his performance on and off the field. His season led to a selection to the Allstate Legacy Bowl and recognition as Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
After completing his final year of eligibility, Achuff transitioned from player to mentor, continuing with the team in a coaching and counseling role while finishing his degree. This shift allowed him to expand his impact and invest in the development of other student-athletes.
"I realized I could still contribute to the game in a meaningful way by helping others grow," he said.
With this in mind, Jared pursued a Master of Arts in organizational Communications for its versatility and relevance across industries.
"Communication is in every single department and organization. So, if I can understand how to communicate effectively, then I will prove myself valuable to any organization," he said.
His coursework, particularly in crisis communications, provided practical tools he applied immediately through his work with the football team.
"I was so lucky that I was able to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it directly to what I was doing within 24 hours," he said.
Drawn to the university's person-centered, community-driven approach, Achuff is pursuing front office opportunities in the NFL while continuing to coach, advocate for student-athletes and further his education. His journey reflects Bowie State's commitment to developing leaders on and off the field.
Beyond athletics and academics, Achuff embraced Bowie State's emphasis on entrepreneurship and community engagement. Inspired by his mother, a professional social worker and passionate entrepreneur, he founded Five Down Development, an athlete advocacy company focused on education consulting and holistic development for student-athletes and their families.
Through Five Down, Achuff supports students in reaching their full potential by promoting mental health awareness, family engagement and strong support systems - an extension of the values he experienced at Bowie State University.
After graduation, Achuff is aspiring to support the NFL across operations, communications and player development.
