Ammunition thefts from sporting goods stores land Oklahoma City felon in federal prison for more than 3 years (DOJ)

OKLAHOMA CITY - ROBERT ALEXANDER PITTS, 39, of Oklahoma City, has been sentenced to serve 37 months in federal prison for possession of ammunition after a previous felony conviction and possession of stolen ammunition, announced U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.

According to public records, in the fall of 2025, Pitts stole ammunition on multiple occasions from Bass Pro and Cabela's stores in Oklahoma City. Pitts concealed boxes of ammunition in his pants pockets, hoodie pockets, waistbands, and elsewhere. In all, Pitts stole 2000 rounds of ammunition.

Public records further reflect that Pitts has previous felony convictions in Oklahoma County District Court that include:

  • attempted larceny of merchandise in case number CF-2013-2650;
  • larceny of merchandise from a retailer and false declaration of ownership to a pawnbroker in case number CF-2015-5544;
  • possession of cocaine and marijuana in case number CF-2015-6365; and
  • felon in possession of a firearm in case number CF-2020-426.

Federal law prohibits the possession of ammunition by convicted felons.

On December 16, 2025, a federal grand jury charged Pitts with being a felon in possession of ammunition and possession of stolen ammunition. Pitts pleaded guilty on April 13, 2026, and admitted that he knowingly possessed ammunition he had stolen and that he possessed the ammunition despite his previous felony convictions.

At a sentencing hearing on October 22, 2026, U.S. District Judge Bernard M. Jones II sentenced Pitts to serve 37 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. In announcing his sentence, Judge Jones noted Pitts' criminal history and the need to promote respect for the law.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Nichols, Jr., prosecuted the case.
