‘Grael departure calls for complete team culture reset on board Mubadala Brazil’

The departure of Martine Grael from the Brazilian team should serve as a catalyst for a complete team culture reset as lower league teams turn their attention to next season, according to SailGP commentators.

In the latest episode of SailGP Tiers, Stevie Morrison and Lisa Darmanin ranked the fleet, highlighting the beleaguered performance of the Brazilian squad.

The problems, Morrison said, started 'at the end of last season' following the departure of wing trimmer Leigh McMillan, who returned to the French team, and flight controller Andy Maloney, who signed with Artemis.

"They had a rug pulled from under them by whoever did the did the contracts and only locked athletes in for one season," Morrison said.

McMillan was replaced by Pietro Sibello while former Danish flight controller Rasmus Køstner took over from Maloney. But since then 'things just haven't been clicking', Morrison said.

Former driver Grael brought the team's culture under focus when she stood in for U.S. driver Taylor Canfield during the Geneva event.

Comments made by Grael after training with the U.S. team praised the U.S. team's 'culture of responsibility'.

"You can see that their team culture is quite incredible and that's why we've been seeing the United States going forwards in the season," she said.

"It was pretty eye-opening to hear that," Morrison said. "There's been something really wrong with [Brazil] and it's a shame Martine's been taken out, but something had to change - that's the reality."

Darmanin called for the team to recruit 'an experienced coach' to come in and 'refresh team culture'.

"They're in a bit of a spin obviously," she said. "They need a real leader what knows what a winning formula looks like and to get everyone to buy into it."

Morrison agreed, calling for a 'control-alt-delete'. He pointed to the team's disappointing race record throughout the summer season, which saw them finish last in Portsmouth, Sassnitz and Valencia. They had an improved 10th place finish in Geneva with Paul Goodison behind the wheel. "They've made a big change - let's see what it does."

Mubadala Brazil will next compete at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix on 21-22 November.
