Biola Announces New Dean of the School of Education

LA MIRADA, CALIF. - Biola University has selected Dr. Nathan Herzog as the next dean for the School of Education, effective March 1, 2026.

Herzog comes to Biola with a distinguished record of service and leadership in Christian higher education. He currently serves as dean of the School of Education at Jessup University, where he has been a member of the executive team since 2004, holding roles including associate provost and director of graduate studies. As dean, Herzog has led the creation of new programs and secured accreditation for the university's first graduate-level degrees. He has also been instrumental in the school's significant enrollment growth.

"Dr. Herzog brings an ideal blend of conviction and kindness, courage and patience," said Matthew Hall, Biola provost and senior vice president. "Throughout the search process he demonstrated strategic leadership, a heart for teachers and students, and a deep commitment to Christian higher education. Nathan's proven track record in program development, accreditation and enrollment growth positions us well to build on that reputation and extend our reach. We are confident he is the right leader to guide Biola's School of Education into its next chapter."

Herzog holds a Ph.D. in leadership in higher education, an M.Ed. in multicultural education and a B.A. in biology. In addition, he completed the executive leadership program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 2023. Over the past two decades at Jessup University, he has served as a tenured professor of education teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

He has consulted for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, chaired a science department at a charter school and been recognized with numerous awards for teaching and leadership. Herzog has also been honored as a Top 100 Visionary Educator by the Global Forum for Education and Learning, received a Certificate of Recognition from the Placer County Planning Commission, and earned the Intellectual Contribution Award from Stanford University.

Herzog expressed enthusiasm about joining Biola University.

"It is an honor to serve as the next Dean of the School of Education at Biola University and to build upon the remarkable legacy of Dr. June Hetzel," said Herzog. "I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to join this Christ-centered community of scholars and educators, and I look forward to working together to prepare the next generation of leaders who will impact schools and society for God's glory."

Dr. Herzog will formally transition into his new role on March 1, 2026. Biola is planning opportunities for faculty, staff and students to welcome him to campus.
