WHEREAS, the ability to communicate effectively in English is critical to personal success, civic engagement, educational achievement, and economic advancement in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, English language learners across Michigan contribute to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our communities, demonstrating resilience, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages has been a leader in advancing English language education, supporting language learners, and promoting excellence in teaching throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, the members of this association are educators, administrators, researchers, and advocates who are dedicated to fostering inclusive, linguistically responsive, and culturally competent classrooms; and,
WHEREAS, the work of this organization enhances the lives of thousands of English language learners, helping them to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential in school, the workplace, and society; and,
WHEREAS, in this milestone year, MiTESOL proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of service, advocacy, and professional excellence in the field of English language teaching; and,
WHEREAS, for half a century, this association has been instrumental in shaping language education policy, empowering educators, and building welcoming communities for multilingual learners across Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, the MiTESOL continues to host conferences, professional development opportunities, and community outreach that empower educators and uplift multilingual communities; and,
WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize and commend the outstanding contributions of English as a Second or Other Language professionals who support language equity, diversity, and inclusion;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 8, 2025, as English Language Educators Recognition Day in the state of Michigan and encourage all citizens to acknowledge the important role English language educators play in enriching our communities and supporting learners from all backgrounds including immigrants and refugees.
