The MBTA announces today that another section of the Red Line, North Quincy to JFK/UMass, can accommodate trains traveling up to 50 MPH.
The MBTA previously raised speeds to 50 MPH on the Braintree Branch between Braintree and North Quincy on March 14, 2025, following critical work as part of the 2024 Track Improvement Program.
Today's speed increase means riders will experience faster trips between Braintree and JFK/UMass in both directions.
"We're seeing real results from our investments in the T," said Governor Maura Healey. "Red Line trains can now reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour between North Quincy and JFK/UMass, giving riders faster commutes and more time back in their day. I'm grateful to General Manager Eng and the hardworking MBTA employees who are making these improvements possible. We're going to keep building on this progress and delivering the faster, safer and more reliable service that riders deserve."
"The Healey-Driscoll Administration is investing in transportation and that is an investment the public, communities and businesses we serve," said Interim Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng. "The MBTA is committed to ensuring we make wise investments that deliver meaningful results for our rider. Just under two weeks ago, we shortened trips and raised speeds on the Orange Line to 55 MPH and today we're proud to make more trips even faster for our Red Line riders. This work couldn't be done without the commitment of the workforce and the support and patience of our riders. Today demonstrates that we are not satisfied with simply restoring service but pushing ourselves to continuously improve on all lines and modes to give the public a best-in-class mass transportation system."
