Highway 146 Improvement Project

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will begin construction next summer on Highway 146, on of our main highways through town. The project will include:

  • Conversion from four lanes to three lanes
  • New asphalt overlay
  • Upgrades to sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, and traffic signals
  • Underground water and sewer improvements
  • Bike trail extension and improvements

Early work

Patching work will begin Tuesday, November 11, starting in the inside northbound lane. If weather allows, patching may also occur in the southbound inside lane this year. Work will generally proceed from south to north.

2026 Construction Timeline (Tentative):

  • Widening of shoulders and subdrain installation to prepare trail fill
  • Underground utility work in the spring
  • Sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, and signals throughout the year
  • Highway overlay in late summer or fall

Lane shifts and intermittent closures are expected, but the road will remain open to traffic. Progress updates will be shared as they become available.
