JULY 31, 2025 - In reaction to the recent enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill by the Trump Administration, the New Mexico Governor hints at a Special Session-Rather than addressing pressing concerns such as CYFD or the rampant drug problem in New Mexico, the governor persists in opposing President Trump and his policies purely for the sake of political theatre. President Trump is providing support to states that chose to designate sanctuary cities for undocumented immigrants but lack the necessary infrastructure, resulting in their resources being stretched thin and being unable to adequately provide for New Mexican citizens. The call for a special session is to cover topics related to the One Big Beautiful Bill and healthcare infrastructure, addressing issues with the SNAP program, and other associated matters. Moreover, the Governor hinted that the special session might feature three criminal justice-related bills: restrictions on firearm possession by felons, revisions to the state's standards for designating individuals as a danger to themselves or others, and permitting courts beyond district courts to hold competency hearings. Furthermore, the governor's legal counsel indicated potential discussions about banning ICE detention centers, but ironically Democrat Senator Cervantes rightly points out that those detained will just be detained in another state. By failing to adhere to the federal mandate, the governor is jeopardizing New Mexico federal funding. ### The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) advances the ideals of individual liberties for the advancement of its citizens and the greater prosperity of our communities throughout New Mexico.
