Cathedral City Fire & EMS Names Engineer Joe Richardson 2025 Firefighter of the Year

Cathedral City Fire & EMS has named Engineer Joe Richardson as its 2025 Firefighter of the Year, an honor recognizing an individual who exemplifies the highest standards of dedication, professionalism, and service both in the field and within the department family.

Joe was formally recognized by the City Council of Cathedral City on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, during its regular meeting at City Hall.

"What truly sets Joe apart, and what makes him deserving of this recognition above all else, is that he genuinely cares about the people around him," said Fire Chief Michael Contreras in announcing the award. "In a profession where we spend so much energy caring for others, Joe makes sure we don't forget to care for ourselves."

A Career Built on Service

Joe's path to the fire service reflects the same purpose and determination that define his work today. He earned his Associate of Arts degree in Fire Science and Emergency Management from Palomar College before completing both the Fire Academy and Paramedic School. Prior to joining Cathedral City, Joe served as a Paramedic with Mercy Ambulance in San Diego while simultaneously volunteering as a Firefighter with the Elfin Forest Harmony Grove Fire Department - a testament to his commitment to public service long before he became a full-time firefighter.

Joe joined Cathedral City Fire & EMS in February 2018 as a Firefighter/Paramedic and was promoted to Fire Engineer in July 2025.

Leading the Charge on Wellness

As Chair of the Department Wellness Committee, Joe has made it his mission to ensure Cathedral City firefighters are cared for physically, mentally, and emotionally. He coordinates physicals for department members, seeks out and attends trainings focused on physical and mental health, and consistently brings back knowledge and resources that benefit the entire team.

Serving at Every Level

Beyond his wellness efforts, Joe's operational contributions are equally impressive. He manages all EMS supply stocking and ordering for the department, oversees the Residential EMS Box Program, and serves as an Engineer Academy Instructor, helping shape the next generation of Cathedral City firefighters. He is also a member of the Local 3654 executive board, where he played an instrumental role in developing the department's staffing SOP.

A Strong Team, On and Off Duty

When Joe isn't on shift, he enjoys spending time with his wife Brittany and their Jack Russell Terrier, Kai - a reminder that behind every firefighter is a strong support system at home.

"Joe represents the very best of what it means to be a Cathedral City firefighter - skilled under pressure, compassionate off the rig, and always putting the team first," Chief Contreras said. "We are fortunate to have him."

Please join the City of Cathedral City in congratulating Engineer Joe Richardson on this well-deserved recognition.
