Egypt and IRU advance TIR implementation to boost regional connectivity

High-level talks in Cairo have reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to becoming a strategic transit hub linking Europe, the GCC and Africa through the global TIR system.

IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto met with Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Trade and Industry last week to review the final steps for implementing TIR.

The TIR system is set to play a central role in Egypt's vision to become a leading trade and transit hub. With its strategic location at the crossroads of continents, Egypt is uniquely positioned to connect Europe, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, and Africa through efficient and secure land transport corridors.

TIR will enable Egypt to operate a land bridge linking newly activated Ro-Ro maritime lines with Italy and Türkiye, while serving major consumer markets across the GCC and Africa. This integration is expected to significantly reduce transit times, lower trade costs, and enhance supply chain resilience.

The visit marks a key milestone in Egypt's journey towards full TIR implementation, reinforcing its role as a regional logistics powerhouse and a vital link in global trade.
