Timothy O’Malley joins Philly Tech Week panel on AI in health care

Timothy O'Malley, executive director of Infrastructure, Cloud and AI at Independence Blue Cross (IBX), participated in a panel discussion during Philly Tech Week on May 7, hosted by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia.

The session, "The Global Pulse on AI in Healthcare," brought together health care and technology leaders to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in medicine today, and what safeguards are necessary as its adoption continues.

At IBX, O'Malley leads infrastructure and platform strategy with a focus on modernization, operational resilience, and aligning technology investments with business and patient outcomes. During the discussion, he highlighted how AI is improving member experience, clinical operations, and administrative processes.

"AI helps us bring different data silos together, speed up processes, and ultimately deliver better health outcomes for our members faster," said O'Malley.

He also emphasized the importance of responsible AI development; recognizing model bias and using inclusive data sets must be prioritized to ensure fair outcomes for all members.

"At IBX, our longstanding health equity outcomes practice helps guide how we approach AI responsibly," said Timothy O'Malley, executive director of Infrastructure, Cloud and AI at IBX.

Panelists agreed that AI has made notable progress in increasing efficiency and stressed that human oversight, transparency, and policy guidance remain critical as it continues to evolve.

From May 4 through 8, Philly Tech Week brought more than 50 events to venues across the city, focusing on accessibility and community engagement. Now in its 16th year, it featured meetups, panels, networking, and social events.
