MANTEO, N.C. - Beginning Aug. 3, Cape Hatteras National Seashore will temporarily close a small section of beach and swimming area in Buxton. This closure will ensure public safety during a Dare County project to repair the southernmost groin near the former Cape Hatteras Lighthouse site. The Seashore expects to maintain the closure for the duration of the repair work.
The Seashore will close public access for 300 feet of beach north and south of the project site, as well as the adjacent ocean area to the east. Surfers, swimmers, and all other recreationists should stay at least 300 feet from the groin area for safety purposes. Entry into the safety closure may delay project implementation.
Visitors should follow all posted signs during this groin repair project and another upcoming Dare County project to renourish the beach in front of the village of Buxton. For updates on this project and other Dare County projects, visit their project webpage at www.darenc.gov/government/projects-on-the-horizon/current-projects.
The Old Lighthouse Beach lifeguarded beach and associated parking lot will remain open for public use.
