Cyber Security Month: Generative AI in the Workplace: Data Protection Challenges - Joint Campaign by FDPIC and NCSC

Whether it's drafting emails, analysing data or summarising reports, generative AI has become an integral part of our working lives. However, the use of this technology carries certain risks, particularly with regard to data protection. This year's Cyber Security Month is dedicated to AI in a professional context. The FDPIC and the NCSC are drawing attention to the key challenges.

Generative AI solutions such as Claude, ChatGPT or Midjourney offer advanced features that can be used to optimise work processes within organisations. For example, they provide a practical tool for creating content, producing translations or summarising lengthy documents. However, the use of generative AI technology can also pose security risks when processing personal data: when entering personal data into an AI tool, there is a risk of disclosing far more information than one realises. In a professional context, this often concerns sensitive data relating to third parties (customers, patients, employees), the processing of which is subject to the Data Protection Act (FADP).

As part of its awareness-raising remit, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has decided to focus this year on the security risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence in a professional context. In collaboration with the FDPIC, it has compiled frequently asked questions and answers relating to the use of AI and published them on its website. The aim of Cyber Security Month is to encourage the responsible use of AI tools in a manner consistent with applicable legislation.

    AI and data protection

Artificial intelligence (AI) is penetrating economic and social life in Switzerland as elsewhere. The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) therefore wishes to point out that the Federal Data Protection Act is directly applicable to AI-supported data processing.
