BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Creating public good in Ohio and beyond, Bowling Green State University continues to build momentum with students, alumni and community and workforce partners alike for providing an education of value through meaningful student experiences and intentionally designed life and career outcomes.

Acknowledging Bowling Green's continued impact in higher education, the BGSU Board of Trustees at their June meeting approved the initiation of a new, comprehensive multi-year fundraising campaign to support student learning experiences and opportunities, recognized University leaders and donors for their contributions to campus and honored retiring faculty for their dedication to quality research and creative activities.

Launching a comprehensive campaign

At the June 25 meeting, the board approved the launch of a new seven-year comprehensive campaign focused on securing private philanthropic support to continue driving key initiatives and priorities at BGSU, including student scholarships and support services, academic programs, industry partnerships, academic facility and lab improvements, technology modernization and more.

Led by University Advancement, the new campaign will focus on advancing Bowling Green's longstanding commitment to being an accessible and relevant educational resource for students and society through innovative academic programs, partnerships and research that create public good and meet workforce needs in Ohio and beyond.

"At BGSU, we are absolutely determined to remain an innovative leader in higher education through relevant academic programs and meaningful student experiences, and the generosity of private donors has undoubtedly helped us achieve our longtime goals in those efforts," BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers said. "As we launch this new multi-year campaign, I am excited to see how supporters both on and off campus will come together to further build on our collective momentum and create public good by supporting students, academics, research and other key initiatives at Bowling Green."

The new campaign comes after the success of the multi-year Changing Lives for the World campaign, which concluded at the end of 2020 and exceeded its $200 million goal by raising over $255 million in philanthropic support for student- and academic-focused priorities.

Honoring campus leaders and supporters

In honor of the contributions of the 11th president of BGSU, trustees supported the naming of space adjacent to the Carillon Bell Tower on the Bowling Green campus as the Mary Ellen Mazey Quadrangle.

The green space located near East Hall and the Education Building serves as a welcoming area for learning community members to study, relax and gather during all seasons of the year.

Beginning her tenure in 2011, BGSU President Emeritus Mazey ushered in a transformative period at the University marked by academic growth, campus revitalization and an enhanced national profile. Additionally, she oversaw the University's second comprehensive fundraising campaign and championed major capital projects to enhance student learning and academic research, including the Michael and Sara Kuhlin Center and significant renovations to University and Moseley halls.

As president, Mazey strengthened the University's focus on and commitment to meaningful student learning experiences and opportunities. She also built relevant and strategic partnerships with public and private entities, including the Ohio Attorney General's Office and Wood County Hospital, to support student learning, faculty research and Ohio's workforce development.

In May, the board of trustees approved the naming of the Mary Ellen Mazey Laboratory on the third floor of Moseley Hall, which honors 1964 alumni Charles and Carol Harper's friendship with the former BGSU president through a separate philanthropic gift.

The board awarded Mazey the title of president emeritus in December 2017 for her visionary leadership and service at BGSU.

Trustees also approved the naming of the Mosser Student Collaboration Space in the newly built BGSU Engineering and Innovation Center for the company's generous philanthropic support of the construction of the state-of-the-art facility.

The newly named space supports integrated teaching and learning among students and faculty alike in the most modern university engineering lab in the region.

Based in Fremont, Ohio, Mosser provides services including general contracting, construction management, design-build delivery and self-performed trades such as concrete, excavation, masonry, carpentry and demolition to clients across the region. Since its founding in 1948, the company has grown into one of northwest Ohio's leading regional contractors and operates as a 100% employee-owned company.

In addition to modern and collaborative spaces, the BGSU Engineering and Innovation Center further elevates student learning with seven cutting-edge specialty labs for training on semiconductors, robotics, advanced manufacturing, augmented reality and more.

Celebrating faculty excellence

Recognizing dedication to years of quality teaching, research and creative activities, trustees granted emeritus status to the following faculty who have retired or will retire from BGSU at the end of the summer 2026 term:

  • Kerry Fan, School of the Built Environment, College of Engineering and Innovation
  • James Foust, School of Media and Communication, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Cynthia Miglietti, Applied Sciences, BGSU Firelands

"We are grateful for the service of our longtime faculty at BGSU for their commitment to teaching and conducting relevant research across various disciplines," said Ravi Krovi, provost and senior vice president at BGSU. "Faculty drive our academic mission and earning emeritus status solidifies one's status as a subject matter expert in their field who is dedicated to teaching excellence and conducting high-impact research that benefits students and society as a whole."

In May, the board also approved emeritus status to 31 additional retiring or retired faculty members.

Updating academic programs

In response to student feedback and workforce needs, the board of trustees voted to update the University's popular Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program to strengthen its scientific foundation and promote graduate career readiness.

In line with accreditation standards, the program's revised curriculum will better support students pursuing various career paths while meeting a growing demand for evidence-based understanding of human behavior. The updated program incorporates integrated research methods, expanded coursework opportunities and enhanced breadth requirements.

Additionally, the revisions will reduce barriers to degree completion and improve program efficiency for students and faculty.

Welcoming new trustees and board officers

The BGSU board welcomed three new trustees to continue building on the University's collective momentum and impact on education and workforce in Ohio and beyond.

Alumnus Everett Gallagher '83 of New Albany, Ohio, was appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on June 5 to a six-year term as a new trustee on the BGSU board.

Gallagher is a former senior vice president and treasurer at Abercrombie and Fitch Company, a leading global specialty retailer of apparel and accessories for men, women and kids. In his role, he was responsible for leading the tax, risk management and treasury functions for the international apparel brand.

Prior to Abercrombie and Fitch, Gallagher served as senior vice president of Wendy's International, where he led the tax enterprise and risk management functions of the former Fortune 500 company. Additionally, he is a former partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Columbus, a global professional services network that provides audit, tax advisory and management consulting.

Gallagher also serves on the board of directors for the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and the Columbus Business Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

At BGSU, Gallagher was president of Undergraduate Student Government and was also a member of Delta Tau Delta, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa and Kappa Mu Epsilon. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Gallagher assumes his role from outgoing trustee Drew Forhan '81, of Hudson, Ohio, who has served on the board since 2017.

Following his appointment by the board in May, Laurence Benz '84, of Louisville, Kentucky, is joining the BGSU board for a three-year term in an advisory role as national trustee.

A seasoned executive leader and founder of multiple companies, including Confluent Health, Benz currently serves as CEO of Dental Care Alliance, where he contributes his deep expertise in healthcare management, workforce development and organizational strategy to one of the nation's leading dental support organizations.

Additionally, he holds investments in the home health, pharmaceutical and education sectors, along with startups in analytics, health services, Texas Roadhouse restaurants and real estate.

Early in his career, Benz founded and led Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team (KORT) from 1987 to 2007, successfully growing the company into a thriving outpatient physical therapy model before its sale to Select Medical.

Benz graduated from BGSU in 1984 with bachelor's degrees in biology and gerontology and holds master's degrees from Baylor University, the University of Pennsylvania and Ohio State University, respectively, and a doctorate from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He also previously served in the U.S. Army Medical Specialist Corps from 1984-89.

Recent alumnus and incoming graduate student Luke Woolard '26 of Westerville, Ohio, was appointed by Gov. DeWine to serve a nearly two-year term as a non-voting graduate student trustee.

After earning his bachelor's degree in systems engineering in just three years, Woolard is transitioning into the BGSU master's program in logistics systems engineering. Additionally, he is spending this summer working a graduate-level internship as a systems design engineer at LogistiQ in Port Clinton, Ohio.

At BGSU, Woolard competes as a Division I student-athlete on the men's cross-country team, where he has been a part of three Mid-American Conference championship teams and honored as a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree.

Woolard also served in Undergraduate Student Government, the Global Management and Leadership Society and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He also co-founded the BGSU Euchre Club while working two on-campus jobs.

Following graduation, Woolard plans to pursue a career in product engineering and management.

Woolard assumes his role from outgoing graduate student trustee Kathryn Ware '22, '26, of Findlay, Ohio, who earned her doctorate degree from BGSU this spring.

Additionally, the board re-elected Amy Shore '86 as chair and Russell Martin '80 as vice chair, respectively.

Trustees also welcomed Liz Turi, associate general counsel at BGSU, as new board secretary. Turi assumes her role from outgoing board secretary Patrick Pauken.

Action items of the board

At their summer meeting, BGSU trustees finalized the University's general and operating budgets for the 2027 fiscal year, which include compensation increases for all staff members.

The board authorized similar increased compensation for full-time faculty members through a collective bargaining agreement with the BGSU Faculty Association.
