Duckworth Slams Trump Administration for Using Unnecessary Force Against Protesters in Broadview

[BROADVIEW, IL] - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) issued the following statement today in response to reports that federal agents are using use tear gas, rubber bullets and other chemical irritants against protesters demonstrating outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, against the immigration enforcement action known as "Operation Midway Blitz."

"I am deeply disturbed by reports that the Trump Administration is using tear gas, pepper spray and excessive force against Americans-including Veterans and even first responders-exercising their First Amendment rights in Broadview. I am in close contact with local police and officials, and I will keep a close eye on this as the situation develops.

"My top priority is keeping our community safe while protecting our Constitutional rights, including the right to peacefully protest. Violence against anyone-whether protestors, members of the media, first responders or Trump's enforcement officials-cannot be tolerated.

"While Trump may refuse to follow the law and even the Constitution in his continuing efforts to stoke the sort of chaos he can use to as pretext for needless military deployments, Illinois and our local law enforcement will continue prioritizing Illinoisans' rights and public safety. I urge folks on the ground to stay calm, stay safe and document what you can so we can hold those responsible accountable."
