SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2026)- The Santa Monica Public Library selects "What You Are Looking For Is in the Library" and hosts author Michiko Aoyama for a discussion and book signing, along with events across the city for its 2026 Santa Monica Reads program.
Running Feb. 2 through March 14, 2026, Santa Monica Reads is the nation's longest-running community-wide reading program that invites all to read a shared book and connect through discussions and events across the city. Established in 2002, this year's selection marks the program's 23rd featured title.
Free copies of "What You Are Looking For Is in the Library," as well as a resource guide with information about the book, its author and Santa Monica Reads events, are available at all Santa Monica Public Library locations, while supplies last.
Aoyama's novel features a heartwarming story about five people at crossroads in their lives who are quietly guided toward change by their wise neighborhood librarian, Sayuri Komachi. Through her thoughtful book recommendations, each finds clarity, purpose and the courage to pursue long-held dreams.
Events and discussions include:

"'What You Are Looking For Is in the Library' is a charming paean to the power of libraries, friendship, and community, perfect for anyone who has ever felt lost and in need of a guiding light," Director of Library Services Erica Cuyugan said. "At a moment when libraries across the country are facing mounting challenges and books are being banned, this novel's celebration of curiosity, connection and the essential role of public libraries feels both timely and vital. We hope it inspires conversations about why these institutions matter and how they continue to anchor and empower our communities."
Santa Monica Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library, with additional support from other community and educational partners.
The Library is wheelchair accessible. For disability-related accommodations, call Library Administration (310) 458-8606 a week in advance.
