IU Kokomo online education fuels local dreams, transforms careers in Indiana

KOKOMO, Ind. - Indiana University Kokomo is celebrating the way its online education programs are empowering local residents to achieve their career goals and make meaningful contributions to their communities. With 551 students enrolled in online programs, IU Kokomo stands as a vital driver of opportunity for north central Indiana and across the state.

IU Kokomo is listening to what today's students want and need-the flexibility and convenience that make higher education possible. The commitment shows in the numbers: 67% of all IUK students take at least one class online, and 25% pursue fully online programs. Behind these statistics are countless individual stories, like Julia Hoskins, whose bachelor's in Nursing from IUK enables her to contribute to the wellbeing of her Indiana community and build strong ties with county schools and social service agencies. Hoskins is now Carroll County Public Health Department nurse, lead case manager for tuberculosis and communicable diseases, and school liaison. Through connections with the Carroll County Local Emergency Planning Committee, she's involved in county emergency planning. She helps schools get the supplies they need. She's connected with other county programs: low-income birth projects, outreach programs, WIC, FSSA office, and Mental Health America. "I'm in touch with all of these, thanks to IU Online. I grew in countless ways, and now contribute across agencies."

IUK's online programs are designed to fit students' lives, offering flexible schedules, multiple start times, and the choice of 8- or 16-week courses, allowing students to balance school with childcare, professional commitments, and personal travel. This accessibility is central to IUK's mission to serve its community. Programs in Computer Science, Data Science, and Informatics also equip students for careers in emerging fields like big data positions, AI development, and cybersecurity monitoring. The Digital Media and Storytelling program readies students for today's dynamic, digitally oriented marketplace and careers that experts can't even imagine in the fast-paced evolution of media. Educators in Indiana can also meet state standards with the new master's in the Science of Reading.

Chancellor Mark Canada confirms the university's role, saying, "IUK is a truly extraordinary campus filled with dedicated, talented people deeply committed to serving students and our region. Its students are part of the growth momentum that highlights the recognized value of an IU education across our state and among the students we serve." Says IU President Pamela Whitten, "We are honored by the record-breaking enrollments across our campuses, as it affirms that the word is out: IU is an exceptional university."
