Wentworth Awarded $245K Grant to Advance Life Sciences Education and Workforce Training

Wentworth Institute of Technology has been awarded a $245,775 grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) to enhance its laboratory facilities and expand workforce training for the next generation of STEM professionals.

The funding is part of a broader $12.3 million investment announced on July 23 by the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the MLSC. Designed to strengthen the state's life sciences talent pipeline, the statewide initiative supports hands-on learning opportunities and industry-aligned degree programs across Massachusetts.

Wentworth secured the funding through the MLSC's Post-secondary Education and Training track. The grant will directly fund the purchase and installation of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, materials, and technology.

By upgrading campus facilities with industry-standard tools, the grant perfectly aligns with Wentworth's core mission of providing project-based, experiential learning. These enhancements will ensure students are training on the exact equipment they will encounter during their co-ops and post-graduation careers in the Commonwealth's booming biopharma, medical device, and digital health sectors.

"Our life sciences industry is one of the biggest reasons Massachusetts continues to lead in innovation and economic opportunity," Governor Maura Healey said in the statewide announcement. "These investments will prepare more students for high-demand careers, strengthen our workforce and ensure companies can continue growing and creating jobs right here in Massachusetts."

The MLSC's Post-secondary track distributed more than $7.3 million to 22 academic institutions and nonprofit organizations this year, emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between academic education and real-world industry demands.

"These investments strengthen the connection between education and industry, ensuring residents across the Commonwealth have the opportunities and resources they need to pursue rewarding careers," said Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley, Co-Chair of the MLSC Board of Directors.

With this new backing, Wentworth continues to cement its role as a premier pipeline for highly skilled, career-ready talent in the Massachusetts innovation economy.
