What Does Delta Stock’s Winning Streak Really Prove

Delta Air Lines (DAL) operates an airline and, on the side, a fuel refinery. The company has watched its stock beat the S&P 500 in each of the last four years. A record like that looks like the mark of an exceptional airline. So take a guess: of 485 large U.S. stocks, how many did the same?

How Rare Is Delta's Winning Streak?

Delta shares climbed faster than the index in each of the four years to October 19, 2026, excluding dividends for both. The first row shows the year before the streak began, when Delta lagged.

Period The stock S&P 500
Oct 11, 2021 to Oct 11, 2022 -33.2% -17.7%
Oct 11, 2022 to Oct 12, 2023 +21.9% +21.2%
Oct 12, 2023 to Oct 14, 2024 +51.3% +34.7%
Oct 14, 2024 to Oct 16, 2025 +13.6% +13.1%
Oct 16, 2025 to Oct 19, 2026 +23.6% +16.0%

Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.

Only 20 of the 485 stocks measured beat the index in all four of those years. The measured group consists of the current S&P 500 members with five years of pricing data. In the latest year, just 38.1% of them beat it at all. Losing to the index remains the normal result for a single stock, and a four-year winning streak is rare.

A long winning run can leave Delta Air Lines a larger share of what you own than you planned. See how to protect a concentrated position.

Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?

With a stock pool this broad, some will build long streaks even if no company performs any better than another. During a typical year of the streak at Delta, about four in ten of these stocks beat the index.

Suppose pure luck determined the outcome. You could put all 485 names in a hat each year and draw out that year's share of winners, averaging a little under four in ten. Repeating that process four years in a row means about ten names come out every single time. Ten companies would post a four-year winning streak with no skill involved at all.

In reality, 20 companies hold such a streak, which is about twice as many as luck alone would dictate. That leaves some of the 20 there on merit and some there by luck, and you cannot tell from the share price which one Delta is.

Did Delta's Profit Grow Through The Streak?

Delta generates most of its sales by flying passengers, and its Airline segment accounted for 92.0% of revenue in fiscal 2025. Measured over twelve months, its profit rose in only two of the four years of the streak.

Profit rose 3,912% over the entire streak while the stock climbed 158.8%. All of that profit gain, and a little more, came in the first year, when profit started from just above break-even.

Profit then advanced another 36.8% in the second year, dipped by less than 1% in the third, and fell 28.9% in the latest year of the streak. The stock still beat the index despite the drop. That leaves Delta with profit rising in the first half of its streak and falling in the second half.

What To Watch Instead Of The Streak

Reported revenue at Delta rose 21.1% in the September 2026 quarter from a year earlier. Management pegged that quarter's revenue growth at 16% using its own measure, and expects growth of about 20% in the December quarter. On the October 9, 2026 call, management also said it expects its fuel bill for the full year to rise 60%.

A streak describes only the share price's past, whereas profit reflects what the business earns. Delta's profit growth over twelve months is the figure to watch, with its next report expected on or around January 11, 2027.

Is Too Much Of Your Wealth Riding On One Stock?

A long winning run leaves Delta Air Lines holders asking how much of it will last. When one position grows into a large part of your wealth, a sharp fall can hurt your whole plan, and selling to spread the money out can bring a large tax bill.
