How do I know I'm downloading the real IRS app?
Use verified IRS links or the official IRS app listings in the Apple App Store or Google Play. You should be cautious of look-alike apps, advertisements and unsolicited messages claiming to provide access to IRS accounts.
What should I do if I see an app or message claiming to be the new IRS app?
If you are unsure whether an app or message is legitimate, don't provide personal or financial information or click unsolicited links. Avoid downloading an app from an unverified source and use verified IRS resources to locate the official app. If you believe you've encountered a scam, visit IRS.gov/submitatip.
Will the IRS ever text or email me asking for personal information?
The IRS will not ask you to provide sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email or pop-up message. Do not respond, click links, or provide information in response to suspicious messages claiming to be from the IRS or about the IRS app.
What taxpayer information or usage does the app collect and how is it handled?
The IRS app uses information needed to provide the service you request. Information you submit is transmitted securely to the appropriate IRS systems. Tax account information displayed after you sign in is not stored as permanent account data on your device. The app may also collect limited technical information about the data collection and how the app is used. For more information about data collection and use, see the IRS privacy policy.
What steps has the IRS taken to ensure the safety and security of the mobile app?
The IRS app uses the same secure sign-in approach used for IRS Individual Online Account. Information sent between the app and IRS systems is encrypted, and the app links only to approved IRS and partner websites. A secure session credential, not your sign-in password, is stored in the device's protected storage while you are signed in. The app requests only permissions needed for supported features. Signing out ends your active session.
Is taxpayer information stored locally on my device?
The app does not store your tax account information locally as permanent app data. A temporary session credential is kept in secure device storage while you are signed in and is cleared when you sign out.
What permissions does the app request from my phone?
The IRS app requests only device permissions needed for the features available in your version of the app. You can review current permission information in the official Apple App Store or Google Play store listing or at IRS.gov/app.
Where can I get help if I have trouble with the app?
For problems downloading or updating the app, use the support available through the Apple App Store or Google Play. For problems signing in, use the approved support channels. For questions about an IRS service or information shown in the app, visit IRS.gov/app for current IRS help options.
Will more features be added to the IRS app?
