Kansas City staff will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 8, at 10:15 AM to mark the grand opening of a new bike and pedestrian bridge on Grand Boulevard. This new pathway runs along the outside of the existing Grand Boulevard Bridge, creating a safe and continuous connection between the River Market district and the developing Berkley Riverfront Park area.
When: Friday, May 6, 2026, from 10:15 - 11:00 AM
Where: On the Grand Boulevard Bike & Pedestrian Bridge, near the River Market entrance (off 2nd and Grand)
Parking: Parking lots in the River Market or nearby on-street parking
Agenda: Remarks will be delivered by Mayor Quinton Lucas, 4th District Councilmembers Crispin Rea and Eric Bunch, City Manager Mario Vasquez, Transportation Director Jason Waldron, Kansas City Streetcar Authority Executive Director Tom Gerand, and KC Current Senior Vice President Missy Jenkins. A ribbon cutting ceremony will follow those remarks.
This bridge fills a missing pedestrian link for the community and aligns with specific accommodations outlined in Kansas City's Walkability Plan. Additionally, this section of Grand Boulevard is part of the proposed Bike KC plan to include separated bicycle facilities.
The new Grand Boulevard bridge is a direct investment in how Kansas Citians move through the city safely and comfortably," said Mayor Quinton Lucas. "The River Market to the Riverfront connection opens up our waterfront in a way that benefits everyone in the community, whether you're biking, walking, or just taking in the view."
The City worked with several partners to make this effort a reality, including the Kansas City Streetcar Authority, RideKC and PortKC. This project was constructed in coordination with the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension project, which will also contribute to enhancing connectivity in the area when it opens on May 18, 2026.
"This project is evidence of the City's commitment to building the kind of infrastructure that puts people first, especially those walking, biking, or using public transit," said City Manager Mario Vasquez. "This pedestrian bridge will add to the vibrancy of the River Market and Riverfront districts, continuing the positive momentum in Kansas City. I want to thank everyone who worked hard to make this possible. This was a team effort across agencies, city departments, and partners."
As Kansas City prepares to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, investments like this will support increased pedestrian activity, improve multimodal transportation options, and showcase the city's commitment to walkability, safety, and modern infrastructure. Please join Kansas City in celebrating this monumental connection at the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 8, at 10:15 AM on the new bike and pedestrian bridge.
