NEWS: Glenn County Hospital’s Critical Access Status Restored by Sen. Schiff’s Fix Signed into Law

Schiff introduced legislation alongside the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith last year to restore Glenn facility as a Critical Access Hospital and prevent major federal funding cuts from Medicare

Washington, D.C. - The federal government is restoring Glenn County Hospital's federal critical access status following a bipartisan deal to pass a fix written by U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), late Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) that was signed into law. The fix is a critical step to reopening the shuttered facility.

"For months, I have worked with my colleagues across the aisle to prevent Glenn County from losing its only hospital. Now, I am proud to report that our bill to restore Glenn Medical Center's status as a critical access hospital has been signed into law, giving Glenn a fighting chance to re-open its doors. This critical moment for Glenn County's residents would not have been possible without the incredible work of the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa. His efforts to get this bill across the finish line will save lives and forever be a part of his legacy. I likewise want to recognize the work of Sen. Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, who was a great partner in moving this bill in the Senate. Around the country, rural hospitals are in trouble and under enormous financial stress. That's why I will stay in this fight to help Glenn fully re-open, while working to ensure that all of our communities in California and across the country can keep their hospitals open," said Senator Adam Schiff.

"Glenn Medical Center's Critical Access designation, secured through bipartisan legislation, is a major milestone for our community. Thank you to Senator Schiff and the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa for their leadership. This designation is a crucial step toward reopening our facility and restoring local access to quality healthcare," said County Supervisor Jim Yoder.

"This moment is deeply meaningful for Glenn County and for everyone who believes rural communities deserve access to local, lifesaving care. We are profoundly grateful to Senator Schiff for his leadership and willingness to work across the aisle with the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa to restore Critical Access Hospital status for Glenn Medical Center. This bipartisan effort reflects a shared commitment to rural America, and it is a legacy Doug can be proud of, one that honors his long-standing dedication to the people he served. While restoring this designation does not immediately reopen the hospital, it restores hope. It keeps the door open for the future and sends a powerful message that Glenn County has not been forgotten. We remain optimistic and committed to continuing this work so that one day Glenn Medical Center can again serve as the heart of care for this community," said Amy Micheli, DNP, FNP, Chief Operations Officer American Advanced Management.

"This is another critical hurdle cleared in what has been a year of challenges that often felt insurmountable. I'm deeply grateful for the leadership and support of the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa, Senator Adam Schiff, my team at American Advanced Management, and our Glenn County community partners. With this stability secured, our focus now turns to the significant work ahead: securing the funding necessary to build a new hospital and restore full healthcare services to Willows," said former CAO Lauren Still.

Background: Last month, while touring parts of the recently-closed Glenn hospital facilities, Senator Schiff announced that his bipartisan legislation he championed alongside the late California Congressman Doug LaMalfa and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith was included in a bipartisan health funding agreement. In October 2025, Schiff announced the bipartisan bill in the Senate to restore the critical access designation to Glenn Medical Center.
