BROOKFIELD, WI - Today, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Education Dr. Murray Bessette visited Brookfield Central High School in support of the U.S. Department of Education's national History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday.
Over 300 students in ninth through twelfth grade participated in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics, learn about the important role Wisconsin has played in our nation's history, and explore the themes of civic engagement and patriotism. The event opened with remarks from Principal Brett Gruetzmacher and Elmbrook School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Hansen, followed by Dr. Bessette.
"Wisconsin has long played an important role in our nation's civic life, producing leaders and communities deeply committed to public service and education," said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Dr. Murray Bessette. "As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, the History Rocks! tour helps students in places like Brookfield connect with our founding principles and better understand the role they can play in shaping America's future."
