The Security Council emergency session on Estonia, a meeting of G20 foreign ministers, and a series of bilateral talks were on the agenda as Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski visited New York. On 22-25 September, Poland's top diplomat took part in the high-level week opening the 80th UN General Assembly session.

The deputy prime minister participated in the UN Security Council session convened after Russia's incursion into Estonian airspace. In his address, Radosław Sikorski called on the Security Council to stand in solidarity with all the nations threatened by Kremlin's provocations and stressed that all countries have an inalienable right to self-defence, which Poland will exercise if needed.

The chief of Polish diplomacy met with his counterparts from Australia, France, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom to discuss the security situation in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. He also attended the Transatlantic Dinner hosted by US Secretary of State, along with other NATO and EU partners.

The deputy prime minister was among the participants of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers (FAC) and a meeting of G20 foreign ministers with other UN members. The visit's programme also included approximately 20 bilateral meetings with representatives of other countries and UN senior officials.

During diplomatic talks, Poland's chief diplomat underlined the need to further support Ukraine. As he pointed out, it is necessary to develop a joint vision of an international order based on respect for all countries' rights, in response to the Russian threat. He raised the issue of the "shadow fleet" which allows Russia to circumvent sanctions. The deputy prime minister also highlighted the necessity to uphold multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter. He emphasised that the UN needs reform, outlining our expectations of the initiative proposed by the UN Secretary-General (the UN80).
