National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members, today announced its endorsement of Christian Menefee in a special election to represent Texas' 18th Congressional District.
"Hardworking, compassionate, and relentlessly pursuing justice for the community, Christian Menefee represents the best of Houston," said NNU President Mary Turner, RN. "His track record of public service and standing up to corporate interests makes him an ally to nurses and patients across Texas' 18th District. NNU is proud to endorse his campaign to strengthen our fightback in Congress."
"These are unprecedented times, especially in Texas, where Republican leadership is pushing forward a racist gerrymandering scheme that will upend American democracy and aims to silence voters of color and low-income workers," said NNU President Turner. "We need champions in Congress who will challenge this authoritarian power grab, and it's clear that Christian is the right choice for Texas' 18th District. Nurses are ready to work with him on an agenda that centers nurses' values of caring, compassion, and community."
"Nurses are the backbone of our health care system," said Menefee. "They are committed to providing care to every patient, and they fight every day to make their hospitals safer and more accessible. Supporting our nurses means supporting a healthier future for all. I'm proud to stand with nurses and National Nurses United in their advocacy for dignity, fairness, and health care as a human right."
NNU supports candidates who are committed to nurses' values, including building a broad movement for transformative social change that includes safe patient staffing in all hospitals across the country, protecting the rights of workers to organize, and guaranteeing health care to everyone. NNU looks forward to helping elect Christian Menefee and working closely with him in Congress on the important issues that affect registered nurses, our patients, and our communities.
National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members nationwide.
