Senator Markey Statement Opposing Appropriations Package That Includes Two-Week Extension of ICE and DHS Funding

Senator Markey opposes any bill to fund Trump's lawless DHS

Washington (January 30, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement today after voting against legislation to advance the five remaining fiscal year 2026 appropriations bills and a two-week continuing resolution to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"I will not support another nickel for Trump's lawlessness. I will not support another cent for Trump's DHS or his ICE thugs and their murderous tactics. We must defund and abolish ICE," said Senator Markey. "Americans were murdered in cold blood by Trump's thugs in the streets of Minneapolis. His roving bands of secret police continue to terrorize communities from Maine to Minnesota with impunity-abusing their power and trampling the Constitution. We must not allow these reckless attacks on our communities to continue. And we must not allow Trump, Pam Bondi, Stephen Miller, and their MAGA minions to use this moment as a Trojan horse to steal our elections.

"ICE must get out of all our cities immediately. And we must hold Trump's thugs who are murdering Americans accountable. That is why we must end qualified immunity for federal law enforcement officers once and for all to ensure the families of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and others can get justice for their loved ones."

Senator Markey is strongly opposed to funding the Trump administration's lawlessness. On Thursday, Markey voted against legislation that would have given billions to Trump's ICE and DHS. On January 12, Senator Markey voted against legislation to advance the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment funding bills. Senator Markey previously opposed Trump's so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which increased ICE's budget by approximately $75 billion over the next four years.
