Homicide and Specialized Investigations Division detectives are working a number of leads in Wednesday night's gunfire near the intersection of Sylvan and S. 6th Streets in the Cayce Homes area that fatally wounded a man believed to be age 18. Confirmation of his identification will be made through fingerprints.
The investigation shows that the deceased was part of a group of five individuals wearing masks and carrying guns who had walked through Cayce Homes around 8:30 p.m. Several other individuals in a different group saw them and gunfire was exchanged. The victim was shot in the chest and died shortly after arriving by ambulance at Vanderbilt.
Three other persons received non-critical wounds. A 19-year-old man who was part of the group of five was hit in the leg, a 23-year-old man was hit in the arm while driving a car in the area, and a 55-year-old man was hit in the leg. The 55 and 23-year-olds are not believed to have been involved in the gunfire exchange.
Three guns, an AR-style pistol and two handguns, were located in the area and seized during the night.
The Specialized Investigations Division is determining the reasons for the dispute between the two groups.
