SALINAS - Speaker Robert Rivas joined Salinas community leaders, residents and neighbors on Saturday to celebrate the grand reopening of the Hebbron Family Center in Salinas, marking a major milestone for the city.
The modernized community center was rebuilt with more than $8 million in state of California funding secured by Speaker Rivas through the budget, following years of advocacy from residents and local officials.
The new facility will once again serve as a hub for youth programs, family services and community gatherings.
"The Hebbron Center proves something incredibly powerful. It proves that when community speaks, when local leaders are united, and when government listens, real change is possible and can happen." Speaker Rivas said in his remarks.
For decades, the Hebbron Family Center served as a safe and welcoming place for children, teens, families and seniors. The center hosted sports and after-school programs, food distribution, and community meetings - running nearly 100 programs each month.
The previous building was forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving a significant gap in services for the community. Residents and advocates continued to push for a new center, leading to the successful investment in the state budget and partnership between the City of Salinas and the State of California.
The new Hebbron Family Center is designed to serve residents of all ages, offering expanded opportunities for youth development, family support services, senior activities and community events.
The space has two assembly areas, multipurpose classrooms, a teen lounge, a kitchen, outdoor sport courts and a courtyard area. The facility will host various vendors and programs to bring back a range of classes and workshops for the community.
Speaker Rivas is proud to help deliver this investment and looks forward to continuing to expand opportunity in Salinas.
