LOS ANGELES - At today's LA Metro Board Meeting, Board Chair Mayor Karen Bass introduced two motions to increase rider safety on Metro and to rename the Pershing Square Station to Biddy Mason Station. Mayor Bass released the following statement:
"The decisions we make as a Metro Board must be informed by the people who use our buses and trains every day. That's what today's motions are about.
"Today, we took another step to strengthen how Metro's Department of Public Safety responds to people in crisis. We must ensure those experiencing mental and behavioral health challenges receive the right resources. We will continue to strategically deploy public safety personnel and Metro Ambassadors to ensure Metro riders are and feel safe during their commutes.
"We also took action to honor Biddy Mason, a trailblazer who petitioned for her own emancipation from slavery and went on to become one of the first Black women to own land in Los Angeles. Last month, I was proud to sign a City Council motion renaming Pershing Square to Biddy Mason Square - today's motion follows the City's lead to officially rename Pershing Square Station to Biddy Mason Station, memorializing an extraordinary Angeleno with overwhelming support from community organizations and Angelenos citywide.
"I will always ensure the voices of all people are at the center of our work to create a safer, more reliable, and more affordable world-class transit system.
