The City of Mesa will honor its volunteers and their contributions with a series of appreciation activities throughout the week, culminating in a volunteer appreciation movie night on Friday, April 24.

"The City of Mesa is built on a strong tradition of volunteerism," said Katie Pollak, Citywide Volunteer Program Coordinator. "Our residents give their time and heart through programs, events and service projects across the city. These efforts bring people together and make Mesa a stronger, more connected community."

City of Mesa volunteers contributed more than 113,421 hours of service in 2025, saving the city an estimated $3,798,469.

As a JustServe City, Mesa is honoring two dedicated volunteers with the JustServe Hero Award. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service and make a significant impact in their community. Jacky Hunt-Broersma and Edwin Broersma have been selected as Mesa's 2026 JustServe Heroes for their work with the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department's adaptive programs.

"Over the past two years, Jacky and Edwin's reliability and passion have made them a cornerstone of the adaptive community," said Natalia Thompson Revoner, Recreation Specialist with Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. "As coaches in our track and field and pickleball Special Olympics programs, Jacky and Edwin consistently show patience, adaptability and genuine care for each athlete's experience. Participants look forward to seeing them, and they have built strong rapport with fellow coaches and staff."."

The awards will be presented at the ASU MIX Center in Downtown Mesa on Friday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. Mayor Freeman will issue a proclamation in honor of National Volunteer Week.
