Wheeling University Students Present Projects During Annual Research Day

WHEELING, W.Va., April 16 - Wheeling University undergraduate and graduate students presented their scholarly work during the 2026 Research Day and Scholarship Symposium on Thursday, April 16.

According to Dr. Teresa Busick, Instructor of Psychology and chair of the planning committee, Research Day at Wheeling University showcased the academic excellence and scholarly engagement of students across a wide range of disciplines. Students in the follow academic programs participated in this year's event: Athletic Training, Biology Business, Communications, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Exercise Science, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Psychology.

More than 70 undergraduate and graduate students displayed research posters or gave oral presentations throughout the day. According to organizers, this is an increase in participants compared to the past five years, and reflects the growing commitment to undergraduate and graduate research at Wheeling University.

"Research Day plays a vital role in the academic mission of Wheeling University. For a smaller institution, opportunities like this are especially significant. Conducting research allows students to engage deeply with their fields, develop professional skills, and contribute meaningful knowledge to their disciplines," said Dr. Busick.

Thirty-six students displayed 28 research posters throughout the morning for faculty, staff and students to review. During the afternoon, 29 oral presentations allowed those students to offer their findings. Additionally, the University's Interprofessional Education panel gave a presentation on research it conducted.

"The research conducted by students reflects both individual inquiry and collaborative efforts, spanning a diverse array of topics that demonstrate critical thinking, innovation, and applied learning," Dr. Busick added.

Dr. Hannah Reichart, Assistant Professor of Athletic Training, said research provides students with valuable, hands-on experience.

"The projects were centered on students' individual interests, fostering engagement while deepening their knowledge and supporting the advancement of their future careers. By participating in Research Day, students have the opportunity to showcase their work and gain presentation experience in a professional setting, preparing them for future academic conferences," Dr. Reichart added.

In addition to Dr. Busick and Dr. Reichart, Ryan Zelinski, Instructor of Athletic Training, was a member of the planning committee.
