UW and Wyoming SBDC Network to Host Webinar on IP Valuation Sept. 19

Small-business owners, entrepreneurs and startups will have an opportunity to learn about determining the value of intellectual property (IP) for startups Friday, Sept. 19.

Adam Falconer will lead a Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network webinar titled "IP Valuation: Determining the Value of Intellectual Property for Startups" from noon-1:30 p.m. To register, go here. Registration is free.

The Wyoming SBDC Network offers business expertise to help Wyoming residents think about, launch, grow, reinvent or exit their business. The Wyoming SBDC Network is hosted by the University of Wyoming with state funds from the Wyoming Business Council and funded, in part, through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The webinar will delve into IP valuation methodologies specifically relevant to startups, examining how different approaches apply in the early-stage context where traditional metrics may be less reliable. The discussion will integrate these valuation principles with strategic IP due diligence approaches for Small Business Innovation Research awardees, demonstrating how early-stage IP portfolio development can significantly impact company valuation and future funding rounds.

Practical guidance is provided on leveraging technical and business assistance funds for IP services, with an emphasis on activities that directly support valuation, such as market analysis, technology landscaping and competitive positioning. The webinar will conclude with strategies for documenting and presenting IP value propositions to potential investors, including best practices for maintaining proper records that satisfy both federal funding requirements and investor due diligence needs.

Falconer, intellectual property adviser for Tambourine Innovation Ventures, has more than 20 years of consulting and technology experience in the areas of intellectual property licensing, technology commercialization, innovation strategy, expert testimony on damages and IP valuation, and data analytics. He has served as a guest lecturer on intellectual property damages at the University of San Francisco School of Law and the University of Kansas School of Law, and has lectured on patent policy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy.
