Construction will begin in early May on a project to expand the South Gartrell Road Bridge over E-470 in southeast Aurora. The work is expected to take about 12 months to complete.
The project, which will include multimodal improvements and new traffic signals, will expand the existing two-lane bridge to a four-lane section with turn lanes.
Starting May 11, lanes will be shifted to the south side of the bridge and narrowed on South Gartrell Road from East Dry Creek Road to South Aurora Parkway, with shoulders closed on both sides of the road. Drivers are advised to use caution and slow down when driving through the construction zone.
As an access point to E-470 for southeast Aurora, Gartrell Road is a critical transportation corridor in Aurora. As traffic volumes through the Gartrell Road and E-470 interchange have increased through the years, so has the need for capacity improvements. This project will improve mobility for all types of travelers through this interchange.
The South Aurora Regional Improvement Authority is providing 80% of the construction funding for this $10.8 million project, with the E-470 Tollway Authority contributing the remaining 20% of funding.
Construction updates and travel impacts will be posted at AuroraGov.org/Gartrell.
