Statement by President Connolly on the death of Des Kenny, Galway

It is with deep sadness that I have learned of the death of Des Kenny, a cherished figure in Galway's cultural life.

The son of Maureen and Des Kenny who opened Kenny's Bookshop in 1940, Dessy embodied the spirit of curiosity and community that made the iconic shop such a cultural landmark. An outstanding bookseller, he possessed a rare gift - the ability to place the right book in the right hands.

Through Kenny's Book Club, which he founded and nurtured over many decades, he opened new worlds to countless readers.

Dessy's love of literature extended far beyond the shop doors. His writing, including his long-running column in the Galway Advertiser, was marked by wit, intellect and insight. He also brought comfort and joy to the residents of St. Mary's Nursing Home, where he read poetry with the warmth and sincerity that were the hallmarks of his character.

Galway has lost a great servant, one whose contribution to the cultural and social life of the city will be remembered with deep gratitude.

My deepest sympathies go to his family, including his beloved wife Anne, children Deirdre, Des, Aisling and Eimear, his many dear friends and to all those who had the great privilege of knowing him.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
