Flowers Hospital Nurse Mercedes Williams Receives National Award for Nursing Excellence

Mercedes Williams, a registered nurse at Flowers Hospital for nearly 10 years, has received a national Nursing Excellence Award.

Williams is one of 10 national winners selected across all hospitals affiliated with Community Health Systems, one of the nation's leading healthcare providers, developing and operating healthcare delivery systems in 32 distinct markets across 12 states. The organization's affiliates include Flowers Hospital and 59 other hospitals.

Williams was surprised with the recognition when hospital leadership called for a special presentation in her department among her colleagues. She was nominated for the award by one of her peers who described her as someone who prioritizes her patients, always going the extra mile for patients and families alike. She often spends her personal time finding ways to comfort and support her patients, like creating a spa day for a long-term patient in the intensive care unit. Additionally, her colleagues say that she fosters collaboration among various departments, continually seeks resources and learning opportunities to enhance skills and boosts morale among staff, setting a high standard for team support.

"Mercedes exemplifies the qualities that define exceptional nursing. She leads with compassion, advocates for her patients, supports her teammates and always looks for ways to improve the care we provide," said Dan Cumbie, Flowers Hospital chief nursing officer. "This award is a wonderful reflection of the impact she makes every day."

This peer-nominated award was established to recognize the vital role nurses play in our work to make the healthcare experience exceptional for our patients, our community and each other. Characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence include outstanding care, compassion, service and innovation, and reflect the efforts of someone who is a demonstrated team player and/or mentor to others, is a leader in times of crises, and who regularly promotes health in the community.

Flowers Hospital CEO Steve Gordon added, "Mercedes embodies the values we strive to deliver each day. Being selected as one of just 10 nurses recognized across Community Health Systems is a well-deserved honor, and we are grateful to have her here at Flowers Hospital."

Williams joined Flowers Hospital in 2015, initially serving in a nursing support role before earning her nursing license in 2017. Currently, she is a charge nurse in the intensive care unit.
