TAMPA, FL. (OCTOBER 8, 2026) - - The Tampa Police Department is launching a new public safety workshop series designed to keep neighborhood voices at the head of the table in addressing public safety concerns and quality of life issues. This quarterly initiative is built on the understanding that partnership with the community can create the best solutions. The inaugural workshop in the department's District 3 will focus collaboratively on firearm safety, responsible gun ownership, and community violence prevention.
The TPD Workshop on Gun Safety will take place on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Fair Oaks Recreation Center, located at 3400 E. Louisiana Ave. The evening will begin with a community meet and greet from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, followed by facilitated breakout discussions from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
The workshop is free and open to the public. The evening is structured around table discussions where residents, community leaders, and neighborhood voices will share ideas and suggested approaches to enhance public safety and quality of life.
Acting Chief Brett Owen, members of the Tampa Police Command Staff, Tampa City Councilwoman Naya Young, NAACP Hillsborough County Branch President Yvette Lewis and Freddy Barton, Executive Director of Safe & Sound Hillsborough, will sit alongside residents as active participants to listen, learn, and support community-driven strategies and solutions.
"Tampa's recognition as one of the safest cities in the country is the result of dedicated police work and the active, hands-on involvement of our community. Keeping our city safe is a shared responsibility that takes all of us working together," said Acting Chief Owen. "Our goal for this workshop series is to listen to what our neighborhoods need, provide our full backing and resources, and work hand-in-hand to bring community-based solutions to life."
To support community-led safety plans and responsible gun ownership during this inaugural workshop, free gun locks will be distributed to attendees while supplies last.
