Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) stock trades at 20.2 times its earnings over the past twelve months, placing it close to the 21.8 times multiple for the S&P 500. Shareholders paying about the market's multiple need to know what they are buying, and the company's priorities have changed. A year ago, during the fiscal Q3 2025 call, management said it was on track to deliver its $2 billion cost reduction. On its latest call, management talked up something different. So what does management emphasize now?
Stanley Black & Decker Now Talks Up Brand Growth
Management now emphasizes growth across its three core brands: DEWALT, Stanley and Craftsman. During the fiscal Q3 2026 call on November 4, 2026, executives described the company as a focused, brand-led organization and said all three brands had grown organically over the past two quarters.
That brand focus replaced the cost program, which came at a time when profits were thin. Stanley Black & Decker reported a net loss over the twelve months to September 2024, and its operating margin over the twelve months to September 2025 was 7.1%. On the fiscal Q4 2024 call, management said it had completed year two of its transformational journey.
Management then declared the program finished. During the fiscal Q4 2025 call in February 2026, executives said the company had captured $2.1 billion of run-rate pretax cost savings since the program began in mid-2022. The cost work has not stopped, and management still credits productivity gains for much of the margin improvement. The company no longer emphasizes a savings target, however, and executives said on the latest call that Stanley Black & Decker is at the end of its major transformational cycle.
Has Stanley Black & Decker's Profit Outgrown Its Sales?
Profit at Stanley Black & Decker has grown far faster than its sales. Operating income over the twelve months to October 3, 2026 was $1.56 billion, compared with $1.08 billion a year earlier. Management has tied the cost work to its margins: on the fiscal Q4 2025 call, executives said tariff mitigation and supply chain transformation efficiencies lifted the adjusted gross margin to 30.7% for full year 2025. Tariff refunds also helped, and management said about 150 basis points of the gross margin it expects for 2026 comes from a refund benefit that will not persist.
Revenue over the same twelve months totaled $15.2 billion, up 0.4% from a year earlier. In fiscal Q3 2026, reported revenue was held back by the shift of gas walk-behind outdoor products to a licensing model and the sale of the aerospace fasteners business, management said.
The brand push shows up in organic growth instead. The Tools & Outdoor segment generated 86.6% of company revenue in fiscal 2024. During fiscal Q3 2026, organic revenue for the unit rose 4%, led by 7% volume growth, management said. Within that segment, Power Tools organic revenue rose 10%, which management tied to market activation and priority brand performance.
Should Stanley Black & Decker Holders Find This Reassuring?
Partly. The cost program ended with its target met, and management now points to rising volume at the main brands rather than to savings already booked. For a holder, that part is reassuring.
The concern is what comes next. Management expects meaningful inflation to address in 2027, particularly for steel and electrical components, and plans a price increase likely around the turn of the year. Executives also expect overall tariff rates to rise back to their former levels. Tariffs have been lower since late February, and management assumes the rise comes very late in 2026, with no material effect on 2026 earnings. During the 2025 US tariff shock, the stock fell 36% at its worst, compared with a 19% drop for the S&P 500.
For now, the brand push shows up in volume but not yet in reported sales. Organic revenue growth in Tools & Outdoor is the measure to watch when Stanley Black & Decker reports its fiscal Q4 2026 results, expected in February 2027.
