At about 10:09 a.m. on Dec. 25, Columbia Police officers responded to a call in the 1400 block of Cinnamon Hill involving an adult male suspect with a knife. At about 10:48 a.m. the suspect was located in the 3200 block of East Stadium Boulevard.
During the police investigation the suspect attempted to assault one of the responding officers with a knife. A Taser was deployed; however, the suspect continued the assault and attacked the officer with a knife, at which point two officers discharged their firearms. Officers then provided emergency medical care to the suspect. The suspect was taken to a local hospital with injuries. The officers were unharmed.
The Columbia Police Department received assistance at the scene from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Boone County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Medical Services.
The Columbia Police Department has requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) respond to investigate the officer involved shooting. DDCC personnel arrived a short time ago and took control of the scene. The Columbia Police Department Internal Affairs Unit will also review the incident to ensure compliance with internal policy.
While the Columbia Police Department will not discuss specific personnel actions or disclose investigative details, it is standard practice to place officers directly involved in such incidents on administrative leave. The suspect's identity is not being released at this time. This remains an ongoing investigation under the direction of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and any further information released will be at their discretion.
