Southeast Schools Encouraged to Participate in MoDOT's 23rd Annual Bridge Building Competition

SIKESTON-The Missouri Department of Transportation is hosting its 23rd annual bridge building competition for high school juniors and seniors in the Southeast District's 25-county region. The competition challenges students to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials−balsa wood, thread and glue.

Schools must register by Sept. 13 to compete. Visit www.modot.org/bridge-competition to register.

MoDOT provides all bridge kits at no cost and will deliver or mail them to participating schools during the week of Sept. 14. Bridges will be picked up during the week of Oct. 27.

Bridges entered in the competition will be tested on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Hall, located at 900 Normal Ave. in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The lightest bridge to carry the greatest load will ultimately be declared the winner. Cash prizes donated by local organizations will be awarded to the top bridge building winners, as well as to the most aesthetic bridge and the winner of the electronic bridge building contest. As in previous years, cash prizes will also be awarded to the top five schools with the best overall performance. The teacher with the most efficient bridge will win a cash prize.

Event sponsors include Southeast Missouri State University, HR Green, Missouri S&T and Rotary Club of Southeast Missouri Service. Southeast Missouri State University will also be awarding a scholarship to the top winner.

Cape Girardeau Safe Communities will be in attendance to discuss the importance of safe driving.
